We are currently seeking a biocurator to work on the Virtual Fly Brain project, a collaboration between the labs of Cahir O'Kane (Cambridge) and J. Douglas Armstrong (Edinburgh), which has developed a rigorously curated data-model (ontology) of Drosophila neuroanatomy in a form that can be easily queried and integrated with related genetic and physiological data. This ontology is used extensively by FlyBase to annotate genetic data and is the engine for queries for neurons, expression and phenotypes on the Virtual Fly Brain web site.
Based in the FlyBase Cambridge office, the successful applicant will:
- work as part of a small team to refine our ontological model of the Drosophila brain based on the literature and consultation with experts
- work as part of the FlyBase curation team to curate expression data from the neurobiology literature into FlyBase
- contribute to design of Virtual Fly Brain
Additional information
You should have a background in Drosophila genetics and/or neurobiology at post-doctoral level. Computing skills are not essential, although some familiarity with programming languages (unix, perl, java) and databases (SQL) would be useful. Previous experience with ontologies would also be useful, but again is not essential. The work will provide opportunities to learn or improve skills in these areas.Apply for job
Completed applications, which should consist of a completed CHRIS/6 application form (Parts I and III) - see http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/hr/forms/chris6/ - a full CV and a covering letter, explaining why you are suited to the position, should be sent to Miss R Baglow, Dept of Genetics, Downing St, Cambridge CB2 3EH. e-mail: jobs@gen.cam.ac.uk.
